Thuja occidentalis - aka 'American Pyramidal Arborvitae', or 'White Cedar'


Overall Description



An excellent columnar / pyramidal Thuja variety that is actually native to the extreme north & northeastern United States. Has shown itself to have very good shade tolerance.....along with excellent cold hardiness. Growth rate in shady locations is somewhat slower that in full sun to part sun locations, but foliage density is virtually unchanged. This variety does experience some degree of winter discoloration ( bronzing ), but varies depending upon planting location, severity of winter weather, and age / size of tree. Bronzing is typically seen more often in younger trees, and then becomes less of an occurrence as the trees mature & become well established.

American Pyramidal Arborvitae makes an excellent hedge or privacy screen choice - recommended spacing of about 3 - 4 feet apart for a good tight hedge or screen. Grows at a moderate rate, and provides cover & nesting areas for many different bird species. This Arborvitae is just a very good, all around evergreen tree - most all of the specialty Arborvitae cultivars seen in the trade today were all developed, and are descendants of this original, native species. Easy to grow, and very undemanding!

Full sun to partial shade - more shade tolerant than most Arborvitae.

Average to slightly acidic & sandy - well drained

--Foliage Color & Texture :
Typical Thuja foliage - good medium green color with average texture seen in most Thuja occidentalis varieties. Some bronzing can be expected in very cold climates.....especially in younger specimens until well established.

--Flower, Cone, Or Berry Facts :
Small 1/4" long cones typical of Thuja occidentalis sp. are found abundantly on this particular variety. Cones start out as pale green, and ripen into a coppery brown color in early fall. Cones contain wingless seeds.

--Diseases / Insects :
Bagworms and spider mites are the most common problems seen with this variety. Regular inspections ( twice a year ) are recommended to monitor for any possible infestations or problems.

--Recommended Spacing :
Typical recommended spacing for use as a privacy screen or border planting is between 3 - 4 feet apart from center of one tree to center of next adjacent tree.We recommend NO CLOSER than 3 feet apart under any conditions.

--Fertilization / Feeding :
For maximum health & hardiness, we highly recommend a good grade granular ( preferably organic ) fertilizer / plant food for use with all of our plant species. We personally use, and recommend the Espoma line of organic plant foods, as they are super effective yet gentle enough to use on even the most delicate of evergreen species where fertilizer burn would normally be a major concern. However, a water soluble type plant food (Miracle Gro, or equivalent ) are also acceptable options. Other granular fertilizers with a 6 - 12 - 12, or 10 - 10 - 10 ratio can also be used - but we suggest using them at 1/2 - 3/4 strength to avoid any chemical burn issues to the root system of the plants. Best to fertilize in early spring, and again in mid fall - avoid feeding standard chemical fertilizers during hot summer months, and directly after transplanting. The Espoma Organic Plant Foods may be used at anytime.
