PLANT DESCRIPTIONS & FACTS
Loropetalum chinense var. rubrum 'Daruma Compact'
Daruma Compact Ruby Loropetalum is a great Loropetalum variety with a nice, tight compact growth habit, and fairly smaller mature size - much smaller, and more compact than most all other varieties seen in the landscape trade today. It is a improved, more compact version of the original standard Ruby Loropetalum. This little gem of a shrub is covered in burgundy colored foliage, which partially matures into a nice deep dark hunter green at certain times of year. In early thru mid spring, Daruma Compact is covered in tassel like blooms that are a hot pink / fuschia color. Blooms persist on the shrub for quite a long time, and can oftentimes be followed by one or two repeated blooms at different times throughout the season....especially in early to mid fall.
Responds very well to trimming / shearing, and can be easily used as a lower growing hedge, or foundation planting in just about any situation where a red / burgundy colored variety is desired - an excellent alternative to the red colored Barberries, as well as most of the dwarf Nandinas.
First developed in China, where several specific strains / cultivars have been extensively bred & developed for ornamental landscape uses. Very nice plant!!

Full sun to partial shade
Average to moist & fertile - well drained with plenty of organic matter is preferred. Mulching also strongly recommended for best results.
Foliage Color & Texture:
Evergreen Broadleaf - very attractive dark burgundy colored new growth with a percentage changing to very dark hunter green as it matures.
Leaves are slightly leathery in appearance, and somewhat oval & undulated in shape. The foliage colors & texture alone make this plant a very worthy landscape addition.
Flower, Cone, Or Berry Facts:
Ruby Loropetalum is covered in masses of hot pink / fuschia colored blooms that are very reminiscent of tassels or pom poms. Blooms are most prevalent in early spring, and again in mid fall........but occasional bloom outbursts will be seen here & there throughout the entire growing season. Addition of organic matter to the soil, or regular feeding will maximize both bloom intensity, as well as foliage color.
Diseases / Insects:
No major problems have been observed.
2 - 2 1/2 feet apart for hedge type planting - widen spacing to approx 4 ft apart for foundation or foreground plantings where distinction between individual shrubs is desired.
Deer Resistance Rating:
Lowest Resistance [ 1 - 2 -
- 5 - 6 -
- 8 - 9 - 10 ] Highest Resistance
Fertilization / Feeding:
For maximum health & blooming, we highly recommend
for use with all of evergreen shrubs. However, either water soluble ( Miracle Gro, or equivalent ), or granular fertilizers ( Holly Tone is excellent ) are also good options. Most any granular fertilizers with a 6-12-12, or 10-10-10 ratio are also acceptable. Best to fertilize in early spring, and again in mid fall - avoid feeding standard chemical fertilizers during hot summer months, and directly after transplanting.
may be used at anytime.
Additional Features & Characteristics:
Container Gardening Selection:
Daruma Compact Ruby Loropetalum makes an excellent container or patio garden choice due to its relatively small mature size, ability to be maintained at a wide variety of sizes / shapes through trimming, and a very non-aggressive root system.
