Thuja occidentalis 'Degroot's Spire'
Degroot's Spire is a very nice columnar form of Arborvitae with good, dark green foliage. It has rather short branches which are spirally arranged - foliage is unique when compared to most thuja varieties. It is almost "fan" shaped. Holds good green color all year long. Excellent for use where width needs to be restricted. Has a somewhat "formal" look to it - especially when used to line driveways, property lines, or along fence rows. Prefers average to slightly acidic soil with good drainage - mulching, and use of organic humus is exceptionally beneficial. Accepts full sun to part shade.

Flower, Cone, Or Berry Facts: Not much to mention - occasional small cones have been found on older specimens. Cones are small ( 1/4" to 1/2" ), and start as a pale green color, ripening to a rich brown.
Diseases / Insects: Bagworms, spider mites, and canker ( Seiridium spp. ) are the most common problems seen with this variety.
Fertilization / Feeding: For maximum health & blooming, we highly recommend POOPeas Organic Fertilizer & Soil Amendment.
However, either water soluble ( Miracle Gro, or equivalent ), or
granular fertilizers ( Holly Tone is excellent ) are also good options. Most any granular fertilizers with a 6-12-12, or
10-10-10 ratio are also acceptable. Best to fertilize in early spring,
and again in mid fall - avoid feeding standard chemical fertilizers
during hot summer months, and directly after transplanting. POOPeas may be used at anytime.
