EVERGREEN PREMIER SELECTION

Thuja occidentalis 'Elegantissima'

Overall Description

Narrow pyramidal form with dark green foliage that is tipped yellow which turns bronze during the winter. A fairly uncommon, seldom seen variety......yet one of the hardiest, most beautiful of them all. Full sun to part shade - plant in fertile, well drained soil. Another nice feature of this plant is that deer generally seem to steer clear of this variety.

Plant Facts & Specifications

Mature Height: 10-15 ft

Mature Width: 4-5 ft

Growth rate: Moderate ( 6"-10" avg per yr )

Hardiness Zones: 4-8 ( if unsure of your zone, please use zone finder below )

Sun Exposure: Full sun to part shade

Soil Preference: Average to slightly sandy - well drained

Foliage Color & Texture: Strong sturdy foliage that is pretty much classic Arborvitae foliage - fanlike in structure, and aromatic when rubbed or crushed. Good medium green color is lightly tipped in yellow gold. Very attractive.

Flower, Cone, Or Berry Facts: Cones form readily on specimens as they age. Cones are typical of the species - approx 1/2" long and ripening to a coppery brown color.

Diseases / Insects: Bagworms, spider mites, and canker ( seridium spp. ) are the more common problems ever encountered with this variety, and are extremely rarely observed. This variety is widely considered to be among the most deer resistant of all the Arborvitae ( Thuja ) cultivars in existence today.

Fertilization / Feeding: Either water soluble ( Miracle Gro, or equivalent ), or granular ( Holly Tone is excellent ). Other granular types with 6-12-12, or 10-10-10 ratio is acceptable. Best to fertilize in early spring, and again in mid fall - avoid feeding during hot summer months, and directly after transplanting.
