Cryptomeria japonica 'Gracilis'
A very unusual, hard to find Japanese Cedar variety that is a very attractive choice for most any landscape where a medium / large sized specimen is desired. Gracilis has a very nice medium green color with very, very little winter discoloration and a nice broadly pyramidal shape as it matures. Has a slightly more open growth habit than many other Cryptomeria cultivars, but with a good branching pattern. This variety is most commonly used as a specimen planting, and works well for any landscape where larger full sized specimens ( 25 ft & larger ) are just too large. Gracilis Cryptomeria is not too big, yet big enough to be a striking focal point in most any area.
Makes a nice effective privacy screen as well when planted about 5-6 feet apart. This Cryptomeria variety tends to start out with a much more open growth habit for the first couple years, then quickly fills in with very, very dense branching & bright green foliage. Definitely worth strong consideration if looking for a medium to large sized evergreen with good green color, and excellent hardiness to fill in an empty spot in your landscape.....or create some privacy along a border / fence.
