Juniperus procumbens nana - aka 'Greenmound Juniper'


Overall Description



These plants are the exact same variety as our standard, traditional Procumbens nana ( Greenmound ) Juniper, but we have specially adapted the growth of these young plants to allow them to reach a slightly taller height, and selected them specifically for use as bonsai subjects. Most have been staked for desired vertical height, which is a highly desirable trait most bonsai hobbyists are looking for in this variety. Some will be shipped with the stakes still attached - others have been removed for safety in transit.

We have taken a few extra, necessary steps to try & offer our bonsai hobbyists an excellent starter specimen with some of the more sought after traits that bonsai artists generally look for in choosing new subjects. The addition of this new, specially selected grade of our Greenmound Juniper is in response to numerous requests that we receive for these certain qualities in the Greenmound Junipers being purchased by our customers for specific use in the art of bonsai. These little guys truly are the "cream of the crop" when it comes to Greenmound Junipers for bonsai use.

Full sun to partial shade - grows slightly slower in shady areas

--Soil Preference :
Average to slightly acidic, sandy - well drained. Mulching recommended when young.

--Foliage Color & Texture :
Evergreen - medium green foliage is very stiff, rigid, and rather prickly......which is pretty typical of most Juniper varieties. Plant responds very well to trimming & training....which helps to make it a very attractive choice for bonsai & topiary projects. Very little, if any winter discoloration noted here in East TN

--Flower, Cone, Or Berry Facts :
Cones - Cones are seldom seen on cultivated specimens, but in its native state cones have been observed - approximately 1/3" across containing three individual seeds.

--Diseases / Insects :
Phomopsis can be a problem...especially if kept in very moist conditions for extended periods of time.

--Recommended Spacing :
2 1/2 - 3 feet for most typical groundcover applications, but can vary slightly depending on exact location, sun exposure, and soil composition.

--Fertilization / Feeding :
For maximum health & hardiness, we highly recommend a good grade granular ( preferably organic ) fertilizer / plant food for use with all of our plant species. We personally use, and recommend the Espoma line of organic plant foods, as they are super effective yet gentle enough to use on even the most delicate of evergreen species where fertilizer burn would normally be a major concern. However, a water soluble type plant food (Miracle Gro, or equivalent ) are also acceptable options. Other granular fertilizers with a 6 - 12 - 12, or 10 - 10 - 10 ratio can also be used - but we suggest using them at 1/2 - 3/4 strength to avoid any chemical burn issues to the root system of the plants. Best to fertilize in early spring, and again in mid fall - avoid feeding standard chemical fertilizers during hot summer months, and directly after transplanting. The Espoma Organic Plant Foods may be used at anytime.
