Selections for Hedge Uses

This page contains a listing of our most popular, and commonly used varieties for use in various styles of hedge plantings. Some are better suited for low growing, formal type hedges, while others can be maintained at much taller heights for medium to larger sized hedges.

Most all of these varieties can be shaped, or maintained in a fairly wide range of shapes, forms, etc through regular trimming & pruning. A few important factors to consider, or keep in mind, when looking at different options for use in hedge plantings are:


1) Foliage color & texture

2) Mature height of the hedge

3) Soil drainage properties at the planting location

4) Amount of sun exposure at the planting location. Certain varieties are much better suited for some particular types of locations better than others - i.e. shady locations, sandy soils, etc.

Elegantissima Variegated Boxwood/Buxus Golden Dream Boxwood  / Buxus Green Gem Boxwood

EXTREMELY HARD VARIETY TO FIND

Elegantissima Boxwood is a very striking boxwood that is most commonly used as an accent plant, but can also be used as a hedge, foundation, or mass plantings with very good results. Has rather small leaves that are splashed with cream coloring, and can be maintained in a wide variety of shapes & sizes through trimming if needed.





Nice semi-dwarf Boxwood variety features heavily variegated evergreen foliage. Colors are green & bright yellow - very striking. Responds very well to trimming & shaping with dense, smaller sized foliage.

Green Mountain is an upright form of boxwood with small dark green leaves. It's an excellent shrub for hedging......especially for those situations where emphasis is on heights slightly taller than usually achieved with other boxwood varieties. Requires cool, moist soil conditions. Does quite well in partially shaded locations also.




Green Velvet Boxwood/Buxus Japanese Boxwood Japanese Boxwood

Excellent foliage with extremely good color year round. Minimal bronzing. Medium size makes it a great choice for hedging or foundation plantings. Hardy!! Can be trimmed & shaped to virtually any shape, size, or height.

This little evergreen boxwood is a hard one to come by, and yet one of the hardiest we have found. One of the first hybrid Distylium varieties to be introduced. Grows equally as wide as it does tall with mature evergreen foliage that is very dark greenish blue. Makes a great hedge or foundation planting.

Cinnamon Girl's growth habit is similar to Vintage Jade. Has smaller, more narrow, finer textured foliage than it's other Distylium cousins. New growth has a bluish-purple tinge maturing to dark green - beautiful plant.

Another addition to the family of Distylium hybrids being brought into the landscape industry. Moderate size, and awesome colored new foliage - bronze / pink colored new growth matures to dark green.
