EVERGREEN PREMIER SELECTION

Juniperus squamata 'Holger'

Overall Description

This is an outstanding semi-spreading juniper with silvery blue / green foliage that is tipped in sulfur yellow new growth. Bright sulfur yellow colored new growth is especially striking in spring through mid summer......absolutely awesome !!! It is considered possible that this juniper is a hybrid between J. squamata and J. chinensis 'Pfitzeriana Aurea'. Makes a great low to medium height border or foreground planting. A very striking plant with wonderful contrast - very hardy, low maintenance. Prefers full sun for best color display, and likes fertile, well drained soil.

 Plant Facts & Specifications

Mature Height: 3 ft

Mature Width:  4 ft

Growth rate: Moderate ( 3"-6" avg per yr )

Hardiness Zones:  4-8 ( if unsure of your zone, please use zone finder below )

Sun Exposure: Full sun preferred, but will tolerate some partial shade as well. Best foliage density, growth rate, and color in full sun.

Soil Preference: Average to slightly acidic & sandy - well drained. Mulching recommended

Foliage Color & Texture: Foliage has a much different texture than most all other J. squamata cultivars - realy looks more like a J. chinensis cultivar, particularly similar to Pfitzer types in foliage structure. Nice bluish / silver foliage with bright yellow new growth which is best displayed from early spring through mid to late summer.

Flower, Cone, Or Berry Facts: None to mention.

Diseases / Insects: Rather trouble free juniper - but occasional bagworms have been noted on some specimens. Recommend yearly inspections of specimens just to be safe.

Fertilization / Feeding:
Either water soluble ( Miracle Gro, or equivalent ), or granular ( Holly Tone is excellent ). Other granular types with 6-12-12, or 10-10-10 ratio is acceptable. Best to fertilize in early spring, and again in mid fall - avoid feeding during hot summer months, and directly after transplanting.
