Distylium Hybrid - (D. myricoides x D. racemosum ) 'Linebacker'

Overall Description

Distylium is a member of the witch hazel family, and are virtually unknown here in North America.......at least in the landscape trade. But that is quickly changing, as new hybrid varieties have been developed & marketed exclusively for a wide variety of uses in the landscape / nursery industry. These new Distylium hybrids are now being produced within the U.S., and are beginning to make their way into landscapes across the country. They are an outstanding alternative to commonly used species such as cherry laurels, junipers, hollies, Indian hawthorn, and even boxwood. Their performance thus far has been outstanding, with several new hybrid varieties planned for development over the next few years.

Linebacker Distylium has a nice densely branched habit, and is fairly similar in coloration & foliage appearance as the Coppertone Distylium. Major difference / distinction between the Linebacker & the Coppertone would be the growth habit of each variety. While the Coppertone is more of a lower growing, arching, mounded type of shape - the Linebacker is a much larger, more upright grower. Probably the most upright of all of the Distyliums currently on the market. It can however, be trimmed in order to be maintained at a variety of shapes, heights, widths, etc.

Foliage is a nice dark bluish green - new growth is coppery red color, and holds that unusual color for quite some time before maturing into the dark bluish green. There is a period of time usually in mid spring or so when the combination of the coppery colored new growth, and the nice darker blue / green mature foliage gives an almost "rainbow". or distinct multicolored foliage effect. Truly beautiful.....and unusual.

As with all of the Distylium hybrids we offer, Linebacker Distylium also displays small reddish colored flowers in late winter, which gives this plant a bit of winter seasonal interest............although the small flowers are not a major feature of this plant by any means. Just a little "bonus" in addition to the other desirable traits that Linebacker Distylium has to offer.

The Linebacker Distylium is part of the First Editions series of new plant itroductions, and was first developed by Plant Introductions, Inc. It has been tested in varying temperature zones, growing conditions, etc to help evaluate just what areas this variety is best suited for. It has been especially impressive in areas with high heat & humidity, and has shown good drought tolerance as well.

--Fertilization / Feeding :
For maximum health & hardiness, we highly recommend a good grade granular ( preferably organic ) fertilizer / plant food for use with all of our plant species. We personally use, and recommend the Espoma line of organic plant foods, as they are super effective yet gentle enough to use on even the most delicate of evergreen species where fertilizer burn would normally be a major concern. However, a water soluble type plant food (Miracle Gro, or equivalent ) are also acceptable options. Other granular fertilizers with a 6 - 12 - 12, or 10 - 10 - 10 ratio can also be used - but we suggest using them at 1/2 - 3/4 strength to avoid any chemical burn issues to the root system of the plants. Best to fertilize in early spring, and again in mid fall - avoid feeding standard chemical fertilizers during hot summer months, and directly after transplanting. The Espoma Organic Plant Foods may be used at anytime.
