Summer & Winter Coloration
Here you see the extremes that can be displayed by Elegans Cryptomeria. The photo on the left shows the nice green, thick foliage typically displayed during the warmer months of the year. On the right, is a specimen showing severe winter bronzing - this bronze / plum coloration is typically displayed only in very cold winter climates, or in locations where the tree is exposed to harsh wintry winds with little, to no protection at all. Any bronzing goes away with the onset of warmer temps in the spring. Here at our nursery ( Zone 7b - East TN ), Elegans shows virtually no coloration change at all, remaining nice & green year round.

Male Cones
Photo showing the male cones produced by Elegans Cryptomeria. These male cones are produced in small "clusters", generally at the terminal ends of both current, and previous years' branch growth.

Needle / Foliage Comparison
This photo shows the distinct differences in foliage between Cryptomeria japonica 'Elegans', and the native species Cryptomeria japonica. The needle-like foliage of Elegans is a slightly lighter shade of green, and is longer in length with a much more "open" arrangement. This difference in foliage structure gives Elegans a much softer texture & appearance - almost has a "fuzzy" look to it from a distance.
