Mature Douglas Fir Trees
Here are a couple of very nice, typical mature specimens. The specimen on the left is much more mature than the one on the right - but you can see the nice growth habit on both trees.

Branches With Ripened Cones
Here is adult branches with fully ripened cones of Douglas Fir. Notice the way the cones are held on the branches - hanging downward. This is a distinguishing characteristic of Douglas Fir. Several Fir species, as well as most Spruce varieties have cones that are held upright on the branches.

Male Cone and Immature Female Cone
The cone on the left is a young male cone of Douglas Fir - whereas the cone on the right is a immature, developing female cone. Only the female cones contain the winged seeds - male cones are for pollination only.
