Juniperus horizontalis 'Plumosa Compacta'

 Overall Description

Low growing juniper with a mature height of 1 to 1 1/2 feet. Spread of 3-4 feet. Foliage is bright green spring through fall, with a purplish to bronze tinge in cold weather. Flat, low spreading growth in a circular form. Tolerates poor, dry soil, city conditions and wind. A good plant for banks, ground cover or island plantings. Also works great as a lower growing foreground planting to accent larger foundation plantings.

 Plant Facts & Specifications

Mature Height: 1-2 ft

Mature Width:  3-4 ft

Growth rate: Moderate ( 4"-5" avg per yr )

Hardiness Zones:  4-9 ( if unsure of your zone, please use zone finder below )

Sun Exposure: Full sun to light shade - grows slower in shady areas

Soil Preference: Will adapt to virtually any soil that has adequate drainage - does not like wet, swampy conditions.

Foliage Color & Texture: Medium green foliage has a much softer texture than most typical juniper varieties - not near as stiff & prickly as most others. Foliage retains good density throughout maturity, which provides good low growing groundcover for many applications. Will bronze / discolor slightly in very cold climates, taking on a slight bronze / purple color which dissipates with the onset of warmer weather.

Flower, Cone, Or Berry Facts: None to mention.

Diseases / Insects: Phomopsis can be a problem...especially if kept in very moist conditions for extended periods of time.

Fertilization / Feeding: Either water soluble ( Miracle Gro, or equivalent ), or granular ( Holly Tone is excellent ). Other granular types with 6-12-12, or 10-10-10 ratio is acceptable. Best to fertilize in early spring, and again in mid fall - avoid feeding during hot summer months, and directly after transplanting.
