Mature specimens
Here are a couple of nearly mature Japanese Black Pine specimens. The one on the left was properly staked, and maintained when young - as opposed to the tree on the right, which appears to have grown without necessart staking when young.....resulting in the "leaning" appearance as it grew older. The lower branches on the tree can either be left in place - as with the specimen on the left, or can be trimmed off as the tree grows in height - as the case with the tree on the right. Depends on just what sort of "look" you want to achieve with this variety.

Japanese Black Pine - Cones
Here are photos of the very distinct cones which are produced on Japanese Blk Pine. They are very short, and broad when compared to many typical pine cones - almost have a "chubby" appearance. Young cones start out as a pale green color, and mature into a mahogany brown color in the late fall.
