EVERGREEN PREMIER SELECTION

Juniperus procumbens 'Variegata'

Overall Description

An excellent low-growing juniper which can be used as a colorful ground cover, or even as a low accent planting to provide contrast. Not as low growing as J. procumbens 'Greenmound', but still an effective ground cover type juniper. Mainly needle like foliage is a nice bright, clear green color that is splashed with a bright, butter yellow variegation. Holds color very well in winter - little, if any, discoloration at all. Prefers full sun, will tolerate some shade......but doesn't like much. As with most all junipers, likes just about any soil that is well drained.

Plant Facts & Specifications

Mature Height: 1-2 ft

Mature Width:  5-8 ft

Growth rate: Slow to moderate  ( 4"-8" avg per yr )

Hardiness Zones:  4-9 ( if unsure of your zone, please use zone finder below )

Sun Exposure: Full sun preferred, but will tolerate some partial shade as well. Growth rate, and foliage density will both suffer slightly when planted in shady locations.

Soil Preference: Average to slightly acidic & sandy - well drained. Mulching recommended.

Foliage Color & Texture: Foliage color is dark emerald green splashed with bright yellow variegation that is its boldest on newer growth. Texture is heavy, with very rigid branches bearing very stiff, rigid, and prickly foliage.

Flower, Cone, Or Berry Facts: Cones rarely seen on cultivated specimens.

Diseases / Insects: Rather trouble free juniper variety - however Phomopsis blight has been observed on specimens if planted in soil with inadequate drainage, or if kept in overly wet conditions for extended periods of time.

Fertilization / Feeding: Either water soluble ( Miracle Gro, or equivalent ), or granular ( Holly Tone is excellent ). Other granular types with 6-12-12, or 10-10-10 ratio is acceptable. Best to fertilize in early spring, and again in mid fall - avoid feeding during hot summer months, and directly after transplanting.
