Juniperus chinensis 'San Jose'
Overall Description
A creeping
groundcover type, low growing juniper with sage green colored foliage that holds
excellent color year round. Spreads irregularly - very hardy. Thrives
well in even very dry conditions. Loves full sun, but will tolerate a
little shade. Great for use in rock gardens, along dry rocky banks, or
in most sandy soils where other plants may fail. Also makes a very good
bonsai subject. Maintenance free. One of the toughest juniper varieties we have ever dealt with.
First introduced by W.B. Clark - San Jose, CA back in 1935.

Sun Exposure: Full
sun preferred, but will tolerate some partial shade as well. Growth rate & foliage density will
suffer slightly in shadier spots.
Soil Preference: Average
to
slightly acidic & sandy - well drained. Mulching recommended.
Foliage Color & Texture: Mixture of both awl & needle type foliage on mature specimens. Foliage & branches are extremely stiff & rigid. Good green color year round

Diseases / Insects:
Rather trouble free juniper variety - however, Juniper
blights have been observed on specimens, especially if kept in
conditions with too much moisture or inadequate soil drainage.
Fertilization / Feeding: Either
water soluble ( Miracle Gro, or equivalent ), or granular ( Holly Tone
is excellent ). Other granular types with 6-12-12, or 10-10-10 ratio is
acceptable. Best to fertilize in early spring, and again in mid fall -
avoid feeding during hot summer months, and directly after
transplanting.
