Juniperus chinensis 'Torulosa'
also referred to as 'Kaizuka' or 'Hollywood' Junipers
Overall Description
A very unusual juniper with an upright, somewhat pyramidal shape. Its foliage is a wonderful bright emerald green, and grows in very irregular twisted sprays which remain upright - no two are alike!! Retains its color during the winter ( no bronzing ). Very nice accent plant, and an interesting focal point in the garden. A very common sight in western U.S. landscapes - particularly in California. But also now used widely in many other parts of the country, including the southeast......where it has performed quite well in a wide variety of landscape uses.
Has shown itself to have excellent heat resistance, as well as very good salt tolerance. Just a really good, all around juniper choice!!

Sun Exposure:
Full sun preferred, but will tolerate some partial shade as well. Growth rate, and foliage density will both suffer slightly when planted in shady locations.
Soil Preference:
Average to slightly acidic & sandy - well drained. Mulching recommended.
Foliage Color & Texture:
Evergreen -
foliage color is a beautiful emerald green color - color retained year round with no discoloration at all here in East TN winters. Texture is fairly soft, with the scale type foliage being rather kind to the touch.
Flower, Cone, Or Berry Facts:
Cones -
numerous small round cones are seen on older, more mature specimens. Cones are bluish silver in color, and about the size of a large pea.
Diseases / Insects:
Rather trouble free juniper variety - however both Phomopsis & Kabatina lights have been observed on specimens if planted in soil with inadequate drainage, or if kept in overly wet conditions for extended periods of time. Very, very tough juniper with few, if any, problems to speak of at all.

No particular spacing recommendations - spacing distances will vary depending upon the purpose intended.

Fertilization / Feeding:
For maximum health & hardiness, we highly recommend
POOPeas
for use with all of evergreen species. However, either water soluble ( Miracle Gro, or equivalent ), or granular fertilizers ( Holly Tone is excellent ) are also good options. Most any granular fertilizers with a 6-12-12, or 10-10-10 ratio are also acceptable. Best to fertilize in early spring, and again in mid fall - avoid feeding standard chemical fertilizers during hot summer months, and directly after transplanting.

Popular Bonsai Choice:
Torulosa Juniper has been known to make a very good bonsai subject due to its interesting twisting type of growth habit.
