Thuja plicata 'Zebrina'
Overall Description
Thuja plicata 'Zebrina' is a nice, fast growing Arborvitae variety with a broad pyramidal growth habit. The overall appearance & color of this tree from a distance is one of a nice bright yellow / green color..........but upon closer view, you will notice that the foliage is striped, or banded with both a nice deep green & golden yellow. This unique pattern & coloration is most intense at certain times of year, depending upon weather & temps. Tends to dissipate considerably during the hot, humid mid summer weather, or in areas of fairly constant high humidity. But in climates with definite cooler seasons, this tree will really put on a nice color display for several weeks at a time.
Can be used as a privacy screen, or equally striking in either a single specimen or group planting. A very worthy tree to be added to any evergreen / confier collection. Easy to grow, and can be trimmed to keep at a variety of heights / widths.

Sun Exposure:
Full to partial sun. Best color noted in full sun locations.
Soil Preference:
Average to moist & fertile - well drained. Mulching recommended.
Foliage Color & Texture:
Evergreen - typical Arborvitae foliage in structure & texture. Color is a nice deep green base color that is striped / banded with a golden yellow coloration for certain portions of the season. Banding pattern will come & go, depending mainly upon seasonal temps & humidity.
Flower, Cone, Or Berry Facts:
Cones - 1/2" long cones contain wingless seeds, and are produced rather prolificly on larger, more mature specimens. Cones begin to form as a light green color in mid spring, and eventually ripen to a dark mahogany brown in winter.
Diseases / Insects:
Bagworms, and heart rot have both been observed on this variety - but extremely rare. Rather trouble free in all honesty.
Recommended Spacing:
5-6 feet apart for typical screen or border planting. Widen spacing if using for a group setting so you can distinguish the shape of each individual tree.

Fertilization / Feeding:
For maximum health & hardiness, we highly recommend
POOPeas
for use with all of evergreen species. However, either water soluble ( Miracle Gro, or equivalent ), or granular fertilizers ( Holly Tone is excellent ) are also good options. Most any granular fertilizers with a 6-12-12, or 10-10-10 ratio are also acceptable. Best to fertilize in early spring, and again in mid fall - avoid feeding standard chemical fertilizers during hot summer months, and directly after transplanting.
