Overall Description



Bar Harbor is a very low growing, spreading groundcover juniper rarely getting more than 4" - 6" from the ground - a real "ground hugging" variety. Foliage color is bluish green, but turns a very distinct, pronounced, purplish color in winter or cold weather. Winter coloration is especially displayed in very windy locations. First discovered in Mt Desert Island, Maine and has shown a very high tolerance for salt spray. Makes a fine groundcover, with good solid coverage. Easy to grow, and quite hardy.

--Sun Exposure :
Full sun to light shade - adapts to a wide range of conditions. Growth rate will be slightly slower in shadier spots.

--Soil Preference :
Will adapt to virtually any soil that has adequate drainage - does not like wet, swampy conditions. Has also shown to adapt well to rocky soils & banks.

--Foliage Color & Texture :
Evergreen - bluish green foliage turns a very striking purplish / plum color in winter....especially in cold climates with high wind exposure. Winter coloration dissipates with the onset of warmer temps & weather in spring. Has a slightly softer texture than many other juniper varieties - not nearly as prickly.

--Flower, Cone, Or Berry Facts :
None to mention.

--Diseases / Insects :
Phomopsis can be a problem...especially if kept in very moist conditions for extended periods of time. Spider mites have also been seen occasionally on this variety.

--Recommended Spacing :
2 1/2 - 3 feet apart for most typical ground cover applications. May vary slightly depending upon characteristics of exact planting site - i.e. sun exposure, slope of land, soil composition, etc.

--Fertilization / Feeding :
For maximum health & hardiness, we highly recommend a good grade granular ( preferably organic ) fertilizer / plant food for use with all of our plant species. We personally use, and recommend the Espoma line of organic plant foods, as they are super effective yet gentle enough to use on even the most delicate of evergreen species where fertilizer burn would normally be a major concern. However, a water soluble type plant food (Miracle Gro, or equivalent ) are also acceptable options. Other granular fertilizers with a 6 - 12 - 12, or 10 - 10 - 10 ratio can also be used - but we suggest using them at 1/2 - 3/4 strength to avoid any chemical burn issues to the root system of the plants. Best to fertilize in early spring, and again in mid fall - avoid feeding standard chemical fertilizers during hot summer months, and directly after transplanting. The Espoma Organic Plant Foods may be used at anytime.
