Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens' aka "Black Mondo Grass"

Overall Description

Black Mondo Grass is a very unusual, and oftentimes hard to find evergreen ornamental grass variety. Has thin bladed, grasslike foliage that is extremely dark purplish black. Color is best, and darkest, in sunny locations - planting in heavily shaded locations will result in a little more green tone to this beautiful grass variety. During the mid summer months, Black Mondo will produce scapes of dark lavender colored flowers, which are then followed in early fall by dark purple berries.

Black Mondo Grass is an outstanding choice for anywhere you might want a low maintenance, carefree......yet unusual border or accents. Contrasts great with any other shrubs, grasses, or trees that are a lighter green / golden color. The additions of the lavender colored flowers, and purple berries also give this Mondo Grass seasonal interest almost year round. Evergreen foliage remains during winter months, but may look a little ragged if exposed to severe winds & weather over the winter. Can be mowed, or trimmed back in early spring if desired to give grass clumps a fresh, new start for the season.

--Fertilization / Feeding: For maximum health & hardiness, we highly recommend a good grade granular ( preferably organic ) fertilizer / plant food for use with all of our plant species. We personally use, and recommend the Espoma line of organic plant foods, as they are super effective yet gentle enough to use on even the most delicate of evergreen species where fertilizer burn would normally be a major concern. However, a water soluble type plant food (Miracle Gro, or equivalent ) are also acceptable options. Other granular fertilizers with a 6 - 12 - 12, or 10 - 10 - 10 ratio can also be used - but we suggest using them at 1/2 - 3/4 strength to avoid any chemical burn issues to the root system of the plants. Best to fertilize in early spring, and again in mid fall - avoid feeding standard chemical fertilizers during hot summer months, and directly after transplanting. The Espoma Organic Plant Foods may be used at anytime.
