Overall Description



This interesting variety of Weigela features the typical trumpet shaped flowers that Weigela is easily recognized by.....and known for. But Canary Weigela offers a total change of pace in terms of the color of these flowers - they are a beautiful shade of yellow, which is very, very unusual for Weigela species. Most all other varieties of Weigela provide good amounts of blooms in varying shades of pink, pink & white, or darker pink to almost a carmine red color. So the Canary variety is a big time switch from the typically seen Weigela shrubs in landscapes all over the eastern half of the United States.

Growth habit is rather open, with long, arching branching habit - but can be trimmed & maintained at virtually any size or shape if desired. Moderate sizes shrub if left to grow naturally without any trimming, which allows it to be utilized as a flowering type of hedge, or as an attention drawing, colorful mass planting.

Good growth rate, and excellent hardiness also make this variety very desirable for many landscape applications. Blooming period typically stats in late April to early May here in East TN ( zone 7b ), and peaks quickly. Blooming period lasts for several weeks, and sporadic re-blooming usually occurs on & off throughout the entire summer. Blooming period can be prolonged by removal / pruning off the old, expired flower heads.

Full sun is best for maximum bloom color and foliage density. But will also accept partial shade

--Soil Preference :
Average to slightly sandy - very adaptable. Soil must be well drained though. Mulch well in fall & winter.

--Foliage Color & Texture :
Deciduous - broadleaf. Typical lance shaped dark green glossy leaves with a slightly serrated edge. Heavy, somewhat leathery leaf texture. Fall color is yellow, but extremely brief before leaf drop, and nothing to write home about, lol.

--Flower, Cone, Or Berry Facts :
Flowers - blooms are trumpet shaped, Color is a nice medium butter yellow, and average approximately 1 1/4" - 1 1/2" in length.

--Diseases / Insects :
No serious diseases or pests have been reported. Leaf spot has been very occasionally observed in areas with high moisture, especially during overnight hours. Would be wise to keep an occasional eye out for a rogue Japanese Beetle here or there.

--Fertilization / Feeding :
For maximum health & hardiness, we highly recommend a good grade granular ( preferably organic ) fertilizer / plant food for use with all of our plant species. We personally use, and recommend the Espoma line of organic plant foods, as they are super effective yet gentle enough to use on even the most delicate of evergreen species where fertilizer burn would normally be a major concern. However, a water soluble type plant food (Miracle Gro, or equivalent ) are also acceptable options. Other granular fertilizers with a 6 - 12 - 12, or 10 - 10 - 10 ratio can also be used - but we suggest using them at 1/2 - 3/4 strength to avoid any chemical burn issues to the root system of the plants. Best to fertilize in early spring, and again in mid fall - avoid feeding standard chemical fertilizers during hot summer months, and directly after transplanting. The Espoma Organic Plant Foods may be used at anytime.
