Lagerstroemia indica 'Double Feature' - 'Whit IX'
Plant Patent #23559
Double Feature is one of the newer Crape Myrtle introductions from renowned plant breeder Carl Whitcomb, and is a superb mid sized Crape Myrtle variety with a number of excellent characteristics. Foliage is deep burgundy red color when young, maturing to a deep green........and has shown high resistance to powdery mildew & leaf spot. Overall plant growth habit & size is nice & compact, with good dense branching habit. Very little trimming required to maintain a nice overall shape.
Blooms begin in early summer, and last right through until mid fall. Bright ruby red blooms do not leave behind seed capsules, which is a very unusual feature not generally seen in most all other Crape Myrtle varieties. Also, Double Feature will produce blooms on the same branches / panicles - reblooms year after year without the need for pruning / trimming as with most other Crape Myrtle varieties. Of course, trimming can still be performed.........and is generally recommended to maximize the number of blooms produces each season. But it is not a necessity as with most other varieties. Double Feature really is the complete package - good size, color, disease resistance, hardiness, growth rate, and low maintenance.......perfect!!
of expired flower heads will oftentimes prolong & increase the
duration of blooms - sometimes well into early October in many areas of
the country. Yearly pruning should be performed - typically in either
early fall, or in very late winter ( just before bud break in the spring
). We recommend pruning branches back to the point where they are the
diameter of approximately 1/2" - 3/4" on more established specimens
.......Certainly no larger in diameter than 3/4". Pruning will be much
less in very young specimens for the first 2 - 3 seasons. Yearly pruning
will spur additional branching habit the following season which, in
turn, will spur on a maximum amount of blooms year after year since
blooms are always produced at the ends of the current years' new growth.
This is one of the main reason we suggest removal of old expired blooms
to help prolong production of new blooms.
