Overall Description


Grows to 60 feet and is the largest timber producing tree in North America. Also makes a very popular Christmas tree because of its color, symmetry, and needle retention. Makes a wonderful addition to landscapes where a "natural" rugged touch is desired. Has short, soft blue-green needles. Grows best in moist, well drained soil - will NOT do well in heavy, wet, or clay soil.

Works very well as a single specimen planting, or extremely effective as a natural wind barrier / privacy screen. Douglas Fir tends to display best needle color with age.....unless given large amounts of the proper nutrients through artificial means when container grown. Takes soil with good organic content, which seems to provide the nutrients needed for a beautiful needle color as the tree becomes established. Truly a magnificent, majestic tree when grown.

--Foliage Color & Texture :
Evergreen - needle like foliage is well over 1" in length, almost 1 1/2" in many cases and, while the branching habit is stiff, the needles themselves are surprisingly soft to the touch. Color is a very attractive blue / green, with best color coming with age and when planted in rich organic soils.

--Flower, Cone, Or Berry Facts :
Cones - young cones start out as a mint green color, slowly ripening into a light golden tan color. Cones contain winged seeds.

--Diseases / Insects :
Several pests / problems exist in the wild, native forest environments - but many are seldom seen in cultivated landscape settings. things to keep a wary eye on in landscape use include : gypsy moth, aphids, cankers ( several different species ), and branch & needle blights.

--Recommended Spacing :
Approximately 8 ft apart when used as a windbreak / privacy screen, otherwise no specific spacing requirements.

--Fertilization / Feeding :
For maximum health & hardiness, we highly recommend a good grade granular ( preferably organic ) fertilizer / plant food for use with all of our plant species. We personally use, and recommend the Espoma line of organic plant foods, as they are super effective yet gentle enough to use on even the most delicate of evergreen species where fertilizer burn would normally be a major concern. However, a water soluble type plant food (Miracle Gro, or equivalent ) are also acceptable options. Other granular fertilizers with a 6 - 12 - 12, or 10 - 10 - 10 ratio can also be used - but we suggest using them at 1/2 - 3/4 strength to avoid any chemical burn issues to the root system of the plants. Best to fertilize in early spring, and again in mid fall - avoid feeding standard chemical fertilizers during hot summer months, and directly after transplanting. The Espoma Organic Plant Foods may be used at anytime.
