Forsythia x Intermedia 'Evergold'

Overall Description

A wonderful variety of Forsythia that has the classic yellow flowers that Forsythia is famous for in early spring, but has beautiful foliage colors as well to add color to your landscape long after those flowers are gone. Foliage is a bright green that is streaked & splashed with a bright yellow gold color. Holds good color even in the heat of summer. Growth habit is typical of most Forsythia, with growth rate being just a bit slower. Likes adequate moisture in a good, sunny location. Average soil requirements, but does best in soil that drains well. Looks great in group plantings, or just as a bright accent in just about any landscape. Responds very well to trimming & pruning.....so can basically be maintained at just about whatever height / width best fits your particular needs.

--Foliage Color & Texture :
Evergreen Broadleaf - large leaves are a medium green color splashed throughout with bright golden yellow. Leaves have a distinct serrated edge, and are very sturdy.

--Flower, Cone, Or Berry Facts :
Flowers - bright yellow tassel-like flowers appear at the very first sign of spring. Oftentimes Forsythia is the absolute first species in the landscape to "wake up" from winter dormancy. Flowers generally last for at least 2 - 4 weeks.

--Diseases / Insects :
No serious problems, but the following have been noted to occur with Forsythia on rare occasions: Crown gall, leaf spot, Japanese weevil, northern root-knot nematode, and spider mites.

--Fertilization / Feeding :
For maximum health & hardiness, we highly recommend a good grade granular ( preferably organic ) fertilizer / plant food for use with all of our plant species. We personally use, and recommend the Espoma line of organic plant foods, as they are super effective yet gentle enough to use on even the most delicate of evergreen species where fertilizer burn would normally be a major concern. However, a water soluble type plant food (Miracle Gro, or equivalent ) are also acceptable options. Other granular fertilizers with a 6 - 12 - 12, or 10 - 10 - 10 ratio can also be used - but we suggest using them at 1/2 - 3/4 strength to avoid any chemical burn issues to the root system of the plants. Best to fertilize in early spring, and again in mid fall - avoid feeding standard chemical fertilizers during hot summer months, and directly after transplanting. The Espoma Organic Plant Foods may be used at anytime.
