Overall Description

A very fast growing arborvitae / thuja selection which is an excellent alternative to Green Giant - but stays just a bit smaller when mature. Tends to have a narrower, and just slightly more columnar growth habit than Green Giant, and very similar to Green Splendor Arborvitae. Foliage is very dark green, and has a finer texture than most other Thuja plicata varieties we've seen.

Makes an excellent privacy screen, border, or windbreak. While not quite as "fast" growing as Green Giant, or maybe even Green Splendor............what Fastigiata compromises in growth rate is easily made up for in both foliage density, and superb color. And the narrower mature width makes it a very useful & worthy choice for areas where privacy is needed, but space will not allow for use of something as large as Green Giant when fully grown. The finer textured foliage will also respond better to trimming / shearing, should that ever be needed.

Moderate to Fast ( 15" - 24" avg per yr ) - much will depend on soil composition, and general growing conditions at the planting site. Not quite as fast as Green Giant, or Green Splendor........but have had 6 ft trees in 3 seasons with good growing conditions.

--Foliage Color & Texture :
Evergreen - nice deep green color with slightly finer texture than Green Giant. Good dense fanlike sprays of foliage.

Cones - small mahogany brown cones should be expected in moderate quantity on more mature specimens.

--Diseases / Insects :
Very disease resistant - occasional bagworms, or spider mites are possible. Inspect trees at least twice yearly for any signs of possible infestations

--Recommended Spacing :
4 - 5 ft apart recommended for most typical privacy screen / windbreak type plantings.

--Fertilization / Feeding :
For maximum health & hardiness, we highly recommend a good grade granular ( preferably organic ) fertilizer / plant food for use with all of our plant species. We personally use, and recommend the Espoma line of organic plant foods, as they are super effective yet gentle enough to use on even the most delicate of evergreen species where fertilizer burn would normally be a major concern. However, a water soluble type plant food (Miracle Gro, or equivalent ) are also acceptable options. Other granular fertilizers with a 6 - 12 - 12, or 10 - 10 - 10 ratio can also be used - but we suggest using them at 1/2 - 3/4 strength to avoid any chemical burn issues to the root system of the plants. Best to fertilize in early spring, and again in mid fall - avoid feeding standard chemical fertilizers during hot summer months, and directly after transplanting. The Espoma Organic Plant Foods may be used at anytime.
