Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Tetragona Aurea' / a.k.a. Golden Fernleaf Cypress

Overall Description

Golden Fernleaf Chamaecyparis is a very nice ornamental cultivar of Hinoki Cypress with beautiful bright golden yellow fernlike foliage. Takes on a pyramidal shape as it grows & matures, with evergreen foliage. This variety is a pretty slow grower, and does not get overly large, making it a wonderful choice for an eye catching specimen planting for areas with space restrictions - also works well as a container specimen if given ample container size & regularly fed properly.

Branch habit is quite open when young, but fills in very nicely with age. We have noticed best color & performance with this variety when planted in a nice partial sun location receiving at least 4-5 hrs of good sun exposure to maintain good color. Also strongly recommend regular mulchings to provide organic matter to soil if not already present.

Golden Fernleaf is a very hard to find cultivar - not very commonly seen in the landscape trade. Has an extremely graceful appearance, and is certain to draw attention as a colorful accent in just about any landscape.

--Fertilization / Feeding :
For maximum health & hardiness, we highly recommend a good grade granular ( preferably organic ) fertilizer / plant food for use with all of our plant species. We personally use, and recommend the Espoma line of organic plant foods, as they are super effective yet gentle enough to use on even the most delicate of evergreen species where fertilizer burn would normally be a major concern. However, a water soluble type plant food (Miracle Gro, or equivalent ) are also acceptable options. Other granular fertilizers with a 6 - 12 - 12, or 10 - 10 - 10 ratio can also be used - but we suggest using them at 1/2 - 3/4 strength to avoid any chemical burn issues to the root system of the plants. Best to fertilize in early spring, and again in mid fall - avoid feeding standard chemical fertilizers during hot summer months, and directly after transplanting. The Espoma Organic Plant Foods may be used at anytime.
