Physocarpus opulifolius 'Nugget' - Gold Nugget Ninebark

Overall Description

A very nice, golden leaved version of Ninebark. Like other Ninebarks, it is a deciduous shrub.... and is very hardy & tolerant to a wide range of soils and conditions. Also extremely cold hardy. Gold Nugget Ninebark has a more compact, rounded growth habit than most of its Ninebark counterparts, which makes it a great choice for anything from informal hedging and smaller border plantings, to foundation & foreground plantings. Also works well as a container specimen for use in patio gardens too!! Produces, very small inconspicuous white flowers during late spring, which will attract butterflies in most areas - but nothing that will knock your socks off. More known for its beautiful foliage, and nice growth habit. The fragrant flowers are usually followed by small clusters of dark red / burgundy colored fruit or seed.

Foliage starts out as a very bright brilliant yellow color, and then darkens to more of a bright lime green as it matures. Fall color brings on another show of nice golden yellow color before going dormant for the winter.

--Fertilization / Feeding :
For maximum health & hardiness, we highly recommend a good grade granular ( preferably organic ) fertilizer / plant food for use with all of our plant species. We personally use, and recommend the Espoma line of organic plant foods, as they are super effective yet gentle enough to use on even the most delicate of evergreen species where fertilizer burn would normally be a major concern. However, a water soluble type plant food (Miracle Gro, or equivalent ) are also acceptable options. Other granular fertilizers with a 6 - 12 - 12, or 10 - 10 - 10 ratio can also be used - but we suggest using them at 1/2 - 3/4 strength to avoid any chemical burn issues to the root system of the plants. Best to fertilize in early spring, and again in mid fall - avoid feeding standard chemical fertilizers during hot summer months, and directly after transplanting. The Espoma Organic Plant Foods may be used at anytime.
