Thuja plicata 'Green Splendor'- formerly known as Thuja plicata 'Hoyt'

Overall Description

A very fast growing arborvitae / thuja selection which is an excellent alternative to Green Giant - grows every bit as fast as Green Giant too. Was originally grown from seed provided from the Hoyt Arboretum, and was developed as a replacement solution for Leyland Cypress. Growth habit is somewhat similar to Green Giant, but tends to be more slender & columnar. Also holds good green color slightly better than Green Giant through winter months.

Makes an excellent privacy screen, border, or windbreak. This variety has become one of our personal favorites here at the nursery. In our opinion & actual hands-on experience with Green Splendor, we feel that it has every bit as fast of a growth rate as we have observed from the Green Giant variety of Arborvitae. Green Splendor tends to shoot up so fast, that younger trees will oftentimes look disproportionately "skinny" as the tree tries to catch of with multiple horizontal branching to fill itself in............the vertical growth is actually that fast on this variety. Have had 6 ft tall trees in 2 full seasons!!

Fast ( 18" - 30" avg per yr ) - much will depend on soil composition, and general growing conditions at the planting site. We typically get the same growth rates out of Green Splendor as we do Green Giant Arborvitae.

Evergreen - nice deep green color with slightly finer texture than Green Giant. Good dense fanlike sprays of foliage.

Cones - small mahogany brown cones should be expected in moderate quantity on more mature specimens.

-- Diseases / Insects :
Very disease resistant - occasional bagworms, or spider mites are possible. Inspect trees at least twice yearly for any signs of possible infestations

5 - 6 ft apart recommended for most typical privacy screen / windbreak type plantings.

-- Fertilization / Feeding :
For maximum health & hardiness, we highly recommend a good grade granular ( preferably organic ) fertilizer / plant food for use with all of our plant species. We personally use, and recommend the Espoma line of organic plant foods, as they are super effective yet gentle enough to use on even the most delicate of evergreen species where fertilizer burn would normally be a major concern. However, a water soluble type plant food (Miracle Gro, or equivalent ) are also acceptable options. Other granular fertilizers with a 6 - 12 - 12, or 10 - 10 - 10 ratio can also be used - but we suggest using them at 1/2 - 3/4 strength to avoid any chemical burn issues to the root system of the plants. Best to fertilize in early spring, and again in mid fall - avoid feeding standard chemical fertilizers during hot summer months, and directly after transplanting. The Espoma Organic Plant Foods may be used at anytime.
