Overall Description


This dense, broadly pyramidal growing cryptomeria has short, exceptionally stiff needles that tend to be a much darker green than most cryptomerias. Holds its color quite well through the winter, but will show some winter bronzing if planted in areas with extremely high winds in winter. Moderate growth rate - starts out as a shorter more shrublike specimen ( somewhat flattened / nestlike appearance ) for the first few seasons, then develops an upright leader and begins to take on a more traditional upright growth habit. Makes an excellent specimen planting, or looks outstanding when planted in a group setting. Also works very well for use as a medium height privacy screen or border.

--Foliage Color & Texture :
Evergreen - thick, rather pliable branches are covered with excellent, green colored needle like foliage. Very sturdy foliage has a heavy texture to it.

--Flower, Cone, Or Berry Facts :
Cones - globular shaped cones are visible on most specimens as they mature, and are approx 3/4" - 1" in diameter. Cones start out in late spring as a light solid green color, and ripen as the season progresses into a coppery brown color in mid fall.

--Diseases / Insects :
No serious problems have been noted - although several troublesome fungi that initiate a tip dieback ( Pestalotia sp. and Phyllosticta sp. ) have been isolated from dead shoot tips and branches in some areas of the Southeastern US. These problems, as rare as they may be, have all occurred in container and field grown nursery stock.

--Fertilization / Feeding :
For maximum health & hardiness, we highly recommend a good grade granular ( preferably organic ) fertilizer / plant food for use with all of our plant species. We personally use, and recommend the Espoma line of organic plant foods, as they are super effective yet gentle enough to use on even the most delicate of evergreen species where fertilizer burn would normally be a major concern. However, a water soluble type plant food (Miracle Gro, or equivalent ) are also acceptable options. Other granular fertilizers with a 6 - 12 - 12, or 10 - 10 - 10 ratio can also be used - but we suggest using them at 1/2 - 3/4 strength to avoid any chemical burn issues to the root system of the plants. Best to fertilize in early spring, and again in mid fall - avoid feeding standard chemical fertilizers during hot summer months, and directly after transplanting. The Espoma Organic Plant Foods may be used at anytime.
