Overall Description


A very striking evergreen shrub that makes a wonderful hedge, and looks equally as nice all by itself as an accent planting. Very disease resistant, and thrives in a wide variety of soil conditions. Large glossy leaves are 1 1/2" - 2" long and at least 1" wide - leaf color is medium green with creamy white variegated margins. Moderate growth - takes either full sun or part shade.

--Soil Preference: Average - will accept a wide range of soil types. Well drained, mulching recommended

--Foliage Color & Texture : Evergreen ( Semi evergreen in some locations around the outer fringes of hardiness range if unsheltered ) - thick, heavy leaves with an almost leathery feel to them. Foliage starts out with a heavy cream colored variegation around the edges with occasional swirls throughout the centers of each leaf. Strong variegation fades with foliage maturity, with more of an olive green coloration. Very attractive at all stages!!

--Flower, Cone, Or Berry Facts : Small inconspicuous, yet fragrant, white flowers are followed in late summer, fall, and winter as dark bluish / black berries that will provide food for birds, and other wildlife.

--Diseases / Insects : No serious pest or disease threats - occasional scale has been reported in high humidity zones

--Recommended Spacing :
3 - 4 feet apart for most typical hedge plantings that are intended to be kept at heights of 5 ft or more. Tighten spacing up to 2 1/2 - 3 ft apart for lower height hedging ( 3 - 4 feet high )

--Fertilization / Feeding:
For maximum health & hardiness, we highly recommend a good grade granular ( preferably organic ) fertilizer / plant food for use with all of our plant species. We personally use, and recommend the Espoma line of organic plant foods, as they are super effective yet gentle enough to use on even the most delicate of evergreen species where fertilizer burn would normally be a major concern. However, a water soluble type plant food (Miracle Gro, or equivalent ) are also acceptable options. Other granular fertilizers with a 6 - 12 - 12, or 10 - 10 - 10 ratio can also be used - but we suggest using them at 1/2 - 3/4 strength to avoid any chemical burn issues to the root system of the plants. Best to fertilize in early spring, and again in mid fall - avoid feeding standard chemical fertilizers during hot summer months, and directly after transplanting. The Espoma Organic Plant Foods may be used at anytime.
