Overall Description


Dense, dark green needles under 1 inch long on branches that grow densely into one another. Highly valued ornamental and timber tree with fast growth, reaching almost 75 feet. Branches droop gracefully as the tree matures. When planted 6 feet apart they make an excellent windbreak. Thrives in average soil condition, but prefers moisture in the soil to retain its dark green color.

--Foliage Color & Texture:
Evergreen - Nice green colored needle like foliage year round. New growth is a bright light green, maturing to a much darker green color. Needles are stiff, but not near as harsh as many other Spruce varieties.

--Flower, Cone, Or Berry Facts:
Cones - Very long cones when ripe - 4" - 6" not uncommon. Cones start as a light lime green color, eventually ripening to a mahogany brown. Cones contain wingless seeds.

--Diseases / Insects:
Rare problems with the following: red spider, spruce gall aphid, bud worm and borers. But overall a VERY tough, hardy spruce variety.

--Recommended Spacing:
We recommend a spacing of about 7 - 8 feet apart for most typical single row windbreaks or privacy screens. Works excellent when staggered in two offset rows instead of just one row.

--Fertilization / Feeding:
For maximum health & hardiness, we highly recommend a good grade granular ( preferably organic ) fertilizer / plant food for use with all of our plant species. We personally use, and recommend the Espoma line of organic plant foods, as they are super effective yet gentle enough to use on even the most delicate of evergreen species where fertilizer burn would normally be a major concern. However, a water soluble type plant food (Miracle Gro, or equivalent ) are also acceptable options. Other granular fertilizers with a 6 - 12 - 12, or 10 - 10 - 10 ratio can also be used - but we suggest using them at 1/2 - 3/4 strength to avoid any chemical burn issues to the root system of the plants. Best to fertilize in early spring, and again in mid fall - avoid feeding standard chemical fertilizers during hot summer months, and directly after transplanting. The Espoma Organic Plant Foods may be used at anytime.
