Loropetalum chinense 'Red Chocolate'

Overall Description

Red Chocolate Loropetalum is a great Loropetalum variety with a dense, more upright growth habit than others of the same species, making more of a mushroom shape when mature. This beautiful shrub is covered in deep, dark purple / slight chocolate colored foliage, and keeps this color through summer. In early thru mid spring, Red Chocolate is covered in tassel like blooms that are a dark hot pink / reddish pink color. Blooms persist on the shrub for quite a long time.

Responds very well to trimming / shearing, and can be easily used as a foundation planting in just about any situation where a darker foliaged colored variety is desired - an excellent alternative to the red colored Barberries. The flower blooms are a real standout!

First developed in China, where several specific strains / cultivars have been extensively bred & developed for ornamental landscape uses. Very nice plant!!

--Soil Preference :
Average to moist & fertile - well drained with plenty of organic matter is preferred. Mulching also strongly recommended for best results.

--Foliage Color & Texture :
Semi-Evergreen Broadleaf - very attractive deep purple / slight chocolate colored growth that keeps the same color through summer. Leaves are slightly leathery in appearance, and somewhat oval & undulated in shape. The foliage colors & texture alone make this plant a very worthy landscape addition.

--Flower, Cone, Or Berry Facts :
Ruby Loropetalum is covered in masses of hot pink / reddish pink colored blooms that are very reminiscent of tassels or pom poms. Blooms are most prevalent in early to mid spring. Addition of organic matter to the soil, or regular feeding will maximize both bloom intensity, as well as foliage color.

No major problems have been observed.

4 - 6 feet apart for hedge type planting.

--Fertilization / Feeding :
For maximum health & hardiness, we highly recommend a good grade granular ( preferably organic ) fertilizer / plant food for use with all of our plant species. We personally use, and recommend the Espoma line of organic plant foods, as they are super effective yet gentle enough to use on even the most delicate of evergreen species where fertilizer burn would normally be a major concern. However, a water soluble type plant food (Miracle Gro, or equivalent ) are also acceptable options. Other granular fertilizers with a 6 - 12 - 12, or 10 - 10 - 10 ratio can also be used - but we suggest using them at 1/2 - 3/4 strength to avoid any chemical burn issues to the root system of the plants. Best to fertilize in early spring, and again in mid fall - avoid feeding standard chemical fertilizers during hot summer months, and directly after transplanting. The Espoma Organic Plant Foods may be used at anytime.
