Hemerocallis 'Stella D'Oro'

Overall Description

Stella D'Oro Daylily has become pretty much the standard yellow colored daylily by which all others are measured. Stella is an extremely prolific bloomer, and also a very early bloomer - with swarms of solid colored butter yellow blooms at their peak. Blooming is usually begins in late April here in East TN. Foliage is a good green color and very grass-like, making a good contrast against the bright yellow flowers. Blooms start in early summer, and extend all the way through till very early fall in most climates. This variety is an excellent re-bloomer, meaning that it is known to produce several "waves" of blooms throughout the summer months, rather then just one heavy bloom period in early summer. Re-blooming can be further increased & encouraged through the removal of old, expired blooms & stalks ( scapes ).

Foliage will go completely dormant in most all climates. We actually suggest trimming, or "mowing" the foliage back to a height of about 5 or 6 inches at the end of the fall season. This way, the foliage can have a fresh, new start when spring rolls around, and will look its absolute best all season long.

Stella D'Oro is now widely used in large scale commercial landscape applications for low maintenance, brightly colored plantings. You can have the same exact results in your personal home landscape as well with Stella D'Oro. Foreground plantings, borders along walkways, even a carefree groundcover - all good uses for this Daylily. Also looks outstanding in mass plantings.

--Fertilization / Feeding :
For maximum health & hardiness, we highly recommend a good grade granular ( preferably organic ) fertilizer / plant food for use with all of our plant species. We personally use, and recommend the Espoma line of organic plant foods, as they are super effective yet gentle enough to use on even the most delicate of evergreen species where fertilizer burn would normally be a major concern. However, a water soluble type plant food (Miracle Gro, or equivalent ) are also acceptable options. Other granular fertilizers with a 6 - 12 - 12, or 10 - 10 - 10 ratio can also be used - but we suggest using them at 1/2 - 3/4 strength to avoid any chemical burn issues to the root system of the plants. Best to fertilize in early spring, and again in mid fall - avoid feeding standard chemical fertilizers during hot summer months, and directly after transplanting. The Espoma Organic Plant Foods may be used at anytime.
