Overall Description



This hard to find yew is rather slow growing, forming a very nice, tight column of needle like foliage typical of the Taxus ( Yew ) species. Foliage color on the newest growth is a very bright golden yellow - the more sun this plant receives, the better the yellow color ). New yellow colored growth gradually fades throughout the summer months into a nice deep green. Growth habit is definitely columnar......with only occasional trimming of a stray branch here & there required to maintain a nice neat shape.

Typical uses for Standishii Yew would be as garden / landscape accents or just about anywhere a slender, columnar evergreen is desired. Just keep in mind that most Yews are rather slow growing.......and Standishii is no exception, with average growth rates of 4"- 6" per year to be expected. But the color & texture combination this beautiful Yew has to offer is well worth putting up with a slightly slower growth rate. By far one of the very best Yew varieties we have ever dealt with - and quite hardy as well!!!

--Sun Exposure :
Full sun to mostly shade - actually superior to most other conifer varieties in shady conditions, but will lose all of the bright golden yellow new growth color if planted in shadier spots.

--Soil Preference :
Moist, sandy loam is preferred - but will adapt to most soil types. Good drainage is a MUST though.

--Foliage Color & Texture :
Very nice dark green needle-like foliage year round with a fine, delicate texture. New growth is a brilliant golden yellow color, and covers the plant in spring thru summer.....fading in mid to late summer into dark green.

--Flower, Cone, Or Berry Facts :
Will usually develop small red colored "cones" - which are actually not cones at all, but rather more resemble some sort of berry. Seed contained within.

--Diseases / Insects :
No serious threats to this variety.

--Recommended Spacing :
No specific spacing recommendations - completely depends on the intended use.

--Fertilization / Feeding :
For maximum health & hardiness, we highly recommend a good grade granular ( preferably organic ) fertilizer / plant food for use with all of our plant species. We personally use, and recommend the Espoma line of organic plant foods, as they are super effective yet gentle enough to use on even the most delicate of evergreen species where fertilizer burn would normally be a major concern. However, a water soluble type plant food (Miracle Gro, or equivalent ) are also acceptable options. Other granular fertilizers with a 6 - 12 - 12, or 10 - 10 - 10 ratio can also be used - but we suggest using them at 1/2 - 3/4 strength to avoid any chemical burn issues to the root system of the plants. Best to fertilize in early spring, and again in mid fall - avoid feeding standard chemical fertilizers during hot summer months, and directly after transplanting. The Espoma Organic Plant Foods may be used at anytime.
