Thujopsis dolobrata 'Aurea' - aka Golden Japanese Elkhorn Cedar

Overall Description

This plant is also known as False Arborvitae, or Hiba Arborvitae - which is why we chose to list them with our other Arborvitae varieties. The native form is found in northern Japan, where some native specimens have been recorded to reach heights of up to nearly 100 ft tall. In cultivation, the 'Hondai' variety of Thujopsis typically has a much shorter mature height to be expected however - with 30 - 35 ft tall being the norm. The 'Aurea' variety of Thujopsis matures at an even smaller overall size than it's completely green foliaged 'Hondai' cousin. Has nice, deep green foliage which remind us of elk horns when the plant gets larger - but with golden colored newer growth, and golden colored tips on slightly older foliage as well. Prefers a nice part sun / part shade location........but color will be best displayed if given at least 4 - 5 hours of good sun exposure per day. Very interesting type of foliage with an extremely dense branching habit. Makes a great medium to large accent plant with the color highlights, and the distinct foliage texture.

Thujopsis 'Aurea' maintains good color with very minimal discoloration / bronzing at all during the winter.........although the golden yellow coloration tends to fade out during winter, leaving mainly a nice green color. Good growth rate, and very hardy. Easy to grow with little to no maintenance required at all.

--Fertilization / Feeding :
For maximum health & hardiness, we highly recommend a good grade granular ( preferably organic ) fertilizer / plant food for use with all of our plant species. We personally use, and recommend the Espoma line of organic plant foods, as they are super effective yet gentle enough to use on even the most delicate of evergreen species where fertilizer burn would normally be a major concern. However, a water soluble type plant food (Miracle Gro, or equivalent ) are also acceptable options. Other granular fertilizers with a 6 - 12 - 12, or 10 - 10 - 10 ratio can also be used - but we suggest using them at 1/2 - 3/4 strength to avoid any chemical burn issues to the root system of the plants. Best to fertilize in early spring, and again in mid fall - avoid feeding standard chemical fertilizers during hot summer months, and directly after transplanting. The Espoma Organic Plant Foods may be used at anytime.
