Liriope muscari 'Variegata' - Also known as Variegated Lily Turfgrass

Overall Description

Variegated Liriope is a beautiful, colorful "twist" on an old traditional favorite. The standard Muscari ( Green Liriope ) has been used in staggering numbers over the past several decades, due to its excellent hardiness, thick coverage, and extremely wide variety of landscape applications. Variegated Liriope has all those same great characteristics.....but with nice variegated blade color.

Foliage ( blade ) color is medium green base color with bright creamy yellow striping, or variegation. The more sun this variety is exposed to, the brighter the overall appearance will be - but be careful, as too much sun, or very intense heat exposure can cause slight burning / browning of the blade tips. Foliage is extremely dense when mature, and forms a nice, tight evergreen grasslike clump. Throughout the summer months, variegated liriope will put forth a display of numerous lavender colored flower spikes, each one followed by a generous collection of purplish / black colored berries in the fall season. Nice thick blades form a mounded clump.

Uses for this variety are almost endless - but among the most common are: planted on slopes for groundcover / erosion control, around the base of larger trees & shrubs as groundcover, edging along landscape beds, along walkways, and I have even seen this grass used as a low growing accent in large container gardens. Even works very well in shady locations - so versatile, it's not even funny!!

--Fertilization / Feeding :
For maximum health & hardiness, we highly recommend a good grade granular ( preferably organic ) fertilizer / plant food for use with all of our plant species. We personally use, and recommend the Espoma line of organic plant foods, as they are super effective yet gentle enough to use on even the most delicate of evergreen species where fertilizer burn would normally be a major concern. However, a water soluble type plant food (Miracle Gro, or equivalent ) are also acceptable options. Other granular fertilizers with a 6 - 12 - 12, or 10 - 10 - 10 ratio can also be used - but we suggest using them at 1/2 - 3/4 strength to avoid any chemical burn issues to the root system of the plants. Best to fertilize in early spring, and again in mid fall - avoid feeding standard chemical fertilizers during hot summer months, and directly after transplanting. The Espoma Organic Plant Foods may be used at anytime.
