Overall Description



An extremely adaptable spruce variety that can be used as anything ranging from a specimen planting, to a mass planting, or even a tall hedge / windbreak / border planting. Our strain of White Spruce are grown from special seed collected from a family property in Northern Michigan. This strain has shown exceptional growth rate, as well as good blue / green color - some of the best color we have ever seen in White Spruce. Color tends to increase with maturity, and can be really brought out to its max through regular yearly feedings, and lots of good mulchings.

White Spruce has long been a favorite out of all the spruce varieties native to North America due to its extreme adaptability and tolerance of an extremely wide variety of conditions. Known to tolerate wind, heat, cold, drought, and even overcrowding - and has also shown itself to even do quite well in moist environments with a high level of airborne salt spray.

--Soil Preference :
Average, slightly acidic, loamy - well drained. Mulching recommended. Will adapt to many different oil types as long ss drainage is adequate.

--Foliage Color & Texture :
Evergreen - very short, stiff needled foliage. Very good color blue / green color, with our particular strain grown from stands with maximum amount of bluish tint. Best color is seen with more mature specimens, and with specimens that have had an adequate amount of high nutrient organic matter provided in the soil.

--Flower, Cone, Or Berry Facts :
Cones - typical cones of what you would normally see on most all Spruce varieties. Slightly smaller in size, rarely reaching a length of more than 2 1/2" - 3". Cones start out in late spring as a light lime green color, and then slowly ripen to a light tan color in early fall. Cones contain small winged seeds.

--Diseases / Insects :
White sawfly, and bagworms are among the only real threats noticed on this variety. Very hardy & resistant to most pests.

--Recommended Spacing :
Space trees approximately 6 - 7 feet apart for use as a good privacy screen or windbreak. Otherwise, make sure this tree is planted at least 8 feet away from other trees, structures, etc to allow the base of the tree to reach its full potential mature width.

--Fertilization / Feeding :
For maximum health & hardiness, we highly recommend a good grade granular ( preferably organic ) fertilizer / plant food for use with all of our plant species. We personally use, and recommend the Espoma line of organic plant foods, as they are super effective yet gentle enough to use on even the most delicate of evergreen species where fertilizer burn would normally be a major concern. However, a water soluble type plant food (Miracle Gro, or equivalent ) are also acceptable options. Other granular fertilizers with a 6 - 12 - 12, or 10 - 10 - 10 ratio can also be used - but we suggest using them at 1/2 - 3/4 strength to avoid any chemical burn issues to the root system of the plants. Best to fertilize in early spring, and again in mid fall - avoid feeding standard chemical fertilizers during hot summer months, and directly after transplanting. The Espoma Organic Plant Foods may be used at anytime.
